What the students, parents and hosts had to say about their job
shadow experience:

From a LinkedIn host: "I just wanted to thank you for organizing Job Shadow for MVHS students! I had a blast with them and I hope they had fun too!  It was a great experience and I would love to do it again in the future."

From a 10th grader parent: "My son went to a company yesterday for a job shadow event. He had such a positive and motivating experience. He came home very happy, confident and full of stories.Thank you all of you for your efforts to expose these young minds to the real world."

From a Student: "Going to the court definitely helped me realize that law is my future. I had already wanted to be a lawyer before this, but being able to talk to lawyers and see them in action was a great experience."

What is Job Shadow Day?

Job Shadow Day is an exciting day for both students and employers.  Students spend part of the day in the workplace "shadowing" employees through a normal day on the job. Students engage in early career exploration that leads to better-informed career (and post-high school) choices.  Employers have the opportunity to present industry trends and career options to potential future employees.

Why was it started?
When shadowing an employee on the job, a student is engaged in the world of work. Understanding the connection between academics and careers motivates students to actively search for meaning and relevance in what they are learning in the classroom. Students also find out what educational background, training and skills are sought after in specific professions.

Who participates?
Job Shadow Day is open to all employers interested in helping prepare our youth for tomorrow’s workforce.  Over 100 local companies/organizations participate including HP, Keystone Credit Union, Flextronics, Granite Rock, Oracle, Best Physical Therapy, City of Cupertino, San Jose Mercury News and other organizations from various fields: medical, manufacturing, hospitality, high tech, internet, banking and finance, visual and performing arts institutions, non-profit, government, and other service industries.

Why would your company want to participate?
  • To motivate students to think beyond high school, explore careers, and excel academically
  • To help shape the future workforce by your involvement in local education
  • To promote your company brand as an employer of choice

What is a host expected to do on Job Shadow Day?

We ask that you host a minimum of 3 students for 3 hours or more.  Most companies host from 9-12 noon.  Some company hosts provide lunch and use the time to de-brief and have casual conversations with the students.   Below are some things you may consider doing:

  1. Introduce/demonstrate the skills required for success on the job
  2. Show how teamwork plays an important role in the organization
  3. Have employees show students their areas of expertise
  4. Plan for the students to do some or all of the following:
  • Receive a tour of the company/facility
  • Rotate through various departments (including marketing, finance, legal, labs, etc.)
  • Work on a special project (market research, user experience study, etc.)
  • Sit-in during a group project/meeting/conference call
  • Observe procedures (orthodontic, x-rays, orthopaedic, etc.)
